Location

St. Lucia is the sort of island that travellers to the Caribbean dream about–a small, lush tropical gem that is still relatively unknown. One of the Windward Islands of the Lesser Antilles, it is located midway down the Eastern Caribbean chain, between Martinique and St. Vincent, and north of Barbados. St. Lucia is only 27 miles long and 14 miles wide, with a shape that is said to resemble either a mango or an avocado (depending on your taste). The Atlantic Ocean kisses its eastern shore, while the beaches of the west coast owe their beauty to the calm Caribbean Sea.

In natural beauty, St. Lucia seems like an island plucked from the South Pacific and set down in the Caribbean. Its dramatic twin coastal peaks, the Pitons, soar 2,000 feet up from the sea, sheltering magnificent rain forests where wild orchids, giant ferns, and birds of paradise flourish. Brilliantly-plumed tropical birds abound, including endangered species like the indigenous St. Lucia parrot. The rainforest is broken only by verdant fields and orchards of banana, coconut, mango, and papaya trees. St. Lucia has been inhabited since long before colonial times, and its cultural treasures are a fascinating melange of its rich past and its many different traditions. The island’s people have earned a well-deserved reputation for their warmth and charm, and the island itself is dotted with aged fortresses, small villages, and open-air markets. There is a broad array of exciting and exotic activities available on St. Lucia. The island’s steep coastlines and lovely reefs offer excellent snorkeling and scuba diving. The rainforest preserves of St. Lucia’s mountainous interior are one of the Caribbean’s finest locales for hiking and birdwatching. Of course, the island also possesses excellent facilities for golf, tennis, sailing, and a host of other leisure pursuits. Not to be missed is St. Lucia’s Soufriere volcano, the world’s only drive-in volcanic crater.

Location

Understated and unspoiled, Anguilla offers laid-back elegance and complete privacy on deserted stretches of powder-soft white sand.  A British protectorate, the island is a mere 16 miles long and three miles wide, with 33 beach hideaways carved into captivating coral coves. Anguilla’s unusual reef marine system was created when seven freighters were purposely sunk to form manmade reefs. Because of the very shallow sites (all are between 35 and 110 feet deep) and near lack of underwater currents, it is a very safe place to dive and an ideal spot to see a variety of colorful underwater wildlife.

Popular activities on Anguilla include visiting numerous small art exhibits & galleries for a taste of local and international culture, exploring exclusive small cays for snorkeling, swimming and picnicking, renting boats on most beaches for racing (Anguilla’s national sport), fishing, or a trip to St. Barth or St. Maarten. Wade into a whole new world while diving near Anguilla’s unique artificial reef — Anguilla is a wonderful place for a beginner diver.

Visitors can fly directly into Anguilla’s Wallblake Airport via private plane, or into St. Maarten via commercial airlines. Arrive in Anguilla from Antigua in 45 minutes or from San Juan in one hour. Guests can take a private 20 minute boat charter from St. Maarten (adjacent to the St. Maarten airport) into Blowing Point on Anguilla.

The residents are island-spiced, friendly and quick to smile. Contemporary Virgin Islanders are literally from everywhere. St John is as diverse as the peaceful Arawak and fierce Carib Indians—and as culturally rich as the peoples of Africa, England, Holland, Denmark, Spain, France, India and the United States.

Location

Despite its location almost smack in the center of the Caribbean Sea, the island of Jamaica doesn’t blend in easily with the rest of the Caribbean archipelago. To be sure, it boasts the same addictive sun rays, sugary sands and pampered resort-life as most of the other islands, but it is also set apart historically and culturally.

Today’s visitors will appreciate their trip to Jamaica all the more if they embrace the island’s unique character and the inherent ‘African-ness’ of its population. Aside from its people, Jamaica has much to offer, the curious, thirsty or weary traveler. The Blue Mountains boasts the world’s best coffee, try a cup in the century-old factory at Mavis Bank. There are world-class reefs for diving including those at Runaway Bay and Ocho Rios and great stretches of palm-fringed sand at Treasure Beach or Frenchman’s Cove near Port Antonio. There are offbeat bush-medicine hiking tours, congenial fishing villages, pristine waterfalls, cosmopolitan cities, wetlands harboring endangered crocodiles and manatees, unforgettable sunsets – in short, enough variety to comprise many utterly distinct vacations.

Nowhere else in the Caribbean is the connection to Africa as keenly felt as it is in Jamaica. Kingston was the major nexus in the New World for the barbaric triangular trade that brought slaves from Africa and carried sugar and rum to Europe, and the Maroons (runaways who took to the hills of Cockpit Country and the Blue Mountains) safeguarded many of the African traditions – and introduced jerk seasoning to Jamaica’s singular cuisine. St Ann’s Bay’s Marcus Garvey founded the back-to-Africa movement of the 1910s and ’20s; Rastafarian-ism took up the call a decade later, and reggae furnished the beat in the 1960s and ’70s. Little wonder many Jamaicans claim a stronger affinity for Africa than for neighboring Caribbean islands. This is a country infused with pride in its unique history, stunning landscape and influential culture.
