Mustique is a private island owned by shareholders of The Mustique Company representing seventeen countries. A controlled development plan dictates that the island currently has one hundred private residences. Seventy-two villas comprise the Villa Collection and are available for weekly rental through Mustique Villa Rentals. It is the island’s constant warm climate, private and unspoilt island lifestyle that attracts sophisticated international guests, many who eventually become owners.

Mustique is such a peaceful island that even during peak season, there is little traffic, congestion or noise. Many of the roads are not paved and there is minimal signage, thus there is a very non-commercial feeling to the island. All of the power and telephone lines are underground. You may find yourself totally alone on its white sand beaches and even renowned spots such as lovely Macaroni Beach remain tranquil and uncrowded. English is the common language but due to an international scope of owners and guests, languages such as French, Italian, German and Dutch are often spoken.

By mid-morning in Virgin Gorda, the sun worshippers have settled down on one of the many deserted beaches that fringe the island: Savannah Bay, Handsome Bay, or Big Trunk Bay. The pace of life is slow on Virgin Gorda, but if you don’t want to spend the day on a beach, there are plenty of other activities. You could explore The Baths, where huge boulders seem to have been arranged by a playful giant to provide a myriad of rock pools, secret beaches, and trails. Visit the Copper Mine standing guard against the blue Atlantic. Or just spend the morning at a hillside restaurant cooled by gentle breezes while you watch the ferries cross the North Sound far below.

Measuring just eight-and-a-half-miles long, Virgin Gorda is the third largest in the island chain. Dramatic slopes plunge from Gorda Peak to the turquoise waters far below. Not many islands offer the range of exclusive resorts, some of them the last word in understated elegance. There are other resorts accessible only by boat. The choice of restaurants will please the most discriminating palate. Whether you stop for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, you’re sure to find yourself lingering longer than you expected. Virgin Gorda has that effect on visitors.

Location

St. Lucia is the sort of island that travelers to the Caribbean dream about–a small, lush tropical gem that is still relatively unknown. One of the Windward Islands of the Lesser Antilles, it is located midway down the Eastern Caribbean chain, between Martinique and St. Vincent, and north of Barbados. St. Lucia is only 27 miles long and 14 miles wide, with a shape that is said to resemble either a mango or an avocado (depending on your taste). The Atlantic Ocean kisses its eastern shore, while the beaches of the west coast owe their beauty to the calm Caribbean Sea.

In natural beauty, St. Lucia seems like an island plucked from the South Pacific and set down in the Caribbean. Its dramatic twin coastal peaks, the Pitons, soar 2,000 feet up from the sea, sheltering magnificent rain forests where wild orchids, giant ferns, and birds of paradise flourish. Brilliantly-plumed tropical birds abound, including endangered species like the indigenous St. Lucia parrot. The rainforest is broken only by verdant fields and orchards of banana, coconut, mango, and papaya trees.

St. Lucia has been inhabited since long before colonial times, and its cultural treasures are a fascinating melange of its rich past and its many different traditions. The island’s people have earned a well-deserved reputation for their warmth and charm, and the island itself is dotted with aged fortresses, small villages, and open-air markets.

There is a broad array of exciting and exotic activities available on St. Lucia. The island’s steep coastlines and lovely reefs offer excellent snorkeling and scuba diving. The rainforest preserves of St. Lucia’s mountainous interior are one of the Caribbean’s finest locales for hiking and birdwatching. Of course, the island also possesses excellent facilities for golf, tennis, sailing, and a host of other leisure pursuits. Not to be missed is St. Lucia’s Soufriere volcano, the world’s only drive-in volcanic crater.
